Tequila!
Sunday, November 16, 2008
I know I know, when you hear Tequila, if you are like me, you have bad memories of spending the rest of the night feeling the coldness of the bathroom tiles under your knees and telling yourself - never, never again you will listen to your friends and get involved in a “who can drink the most Tequila” contest. Well, those are not proud moments of my life but what can I tell you, young and smart are two very different word!
So after a very miserable Tequila experience years and years ago, my boyfriend tells me that he will take me to the best Tequila Bar in town. I almost gag just hearing the word Tequila again, but smiled and said: Sure!
I have, since, been to Tommy’s numerous times and now when you talk about Tequila in front of me, I am proud to say that Yes! my mouth is watering.
Tommy’s is a neighborhood bar Restaurant hidden in the avenues. It always feels to me like I almost need my passport to go over there since the journey seems so long, but once you get to Tommy’s and you manage to find parking, which can be almost impossible, then you will open the door to Tequila paradise, the trip would then feel effortless.
Owned by Julio Bermejo, one of the world most knowledgeable Tequila aficionado, and official ambassador of Tequila outside Mexico, Tommy’s will change your mind about Tequila and will correct forever all the bad frozen stuff you’ve called Margarita before and will make you understand what it’s all about.
You can find over 100’s of different Tequilas: Añejo, Extra-Añejo, Reposado, Blanco and Joven, you can ask them as a shot or in a REAL Margarita (no pre-mix there!!!). Trust me, it’s all worth it!
No fuss here, no fancy glass or hot chicks behind the bar, this is a family owned business, at the door you’ll be greeted by a sweet and wonderful older gentlemen who will always remember you and at the bar you’ll see a team of young guys that no matter what time of the day always seem to cut more fresh limes and be blending Margaritas. As soon as you seat you will be served some chips and salsa and your journey should start there. Let those guys do their job, you won’t be disappointed.
Though I have eaten at Tommy’s a couple of times, this is not why I go there. I want the ambiance, the Tequila and for once a bar that doesn’t want to be more! I always recognize faces there because the fan list is huge and I always get great service.
Summary: This is a place for Tequila Aficionado, the ones who want to know more about Tequila or just people like me who want to enjoy a really good Margarita. You can’t find anything better in the city, not even in the country!!! Bill for 4 (2 pitcher of margarita with Reposado): $66 (tip not included) the Pitchers are pretty big. Remember to cab there or get a designated driver A MUST! Those Margarita will get you more than you can imagine!
