Monday night football
Monday, December 22, 2008
Ok, I am French and I don’t do Monday night football, usually. For me football is the game where you have crazy italians in shorts running after a ball, they fall and pretend they lost a leg, that’s football. Now, on Monday in this strange country, there is something equally disturbing as the European equivalent, it’s Monday night football. If you are lucky enough you will catch your team playing at the Tornado on haight street, this beer bar for all ages (I mean above 21 of course) this is a wonderful mix of neighbors, out-of-owners, lost chickies, The BF, bikers, beer aficionado and a french girl looking to support the BF’s team! Me. I love the ambiance.
Don’t go if you have a headache, the crowd will get loud.
Tornado reminds me of the bars I use to crawl around when I was younger in the city of light, unpretentious, cool and easy. I love the beers, though I have yet scratch the surface, I think it will take me years and/or a new liver to try all the beers offered there!
Anyway, this place rocks, the staff is great and always inviting though I sometimes look like a fish out of the water in the ambiance.
Thumbs up for the place, you should try it, On monday to cheer up your team, on weekends because this place is loaded with fun people, on weekdays because you’ll meet the locals.
In the middle of the game I got starving for something and I walked to Rosamunde Sausage Grill, already the fans were pouring out of the Tornado, they had the same idea than me and I ended up looking at the board like everyone else.
This time I am going for the Weisswurt, made with onion, veal and leeks. After I placed my order, I walked back to the Tornado to finish my beer. Five minutes later, I walk back in, the young lady who seem to own the place with a charming German accent, puts my sausage nicely grilled on a bun, ask me what else I want on there, so I said grilled onions and sauerkraut. I added some mustard and here it was, my monday night football dinner. Weisswurt sausage with grilled onion and sauerkraut. I walk back to the Tornado. It didn’t take me long to inhale this, it was really good. Washed it down with some local beer and that did the trick for me. I didn’t care who was winning or loosing, football was long gone in my mind. But the sausage, will be remembered for a long time!
Summary: This is the perfect for a sausage, beer and a game. If you are in the neighborhood, check this place out. It’s worth it!
Note: If you are lucky enough to have time on Tuesday for lunch, there is one event that you should never miss in the city: it’s burger lunch at Rosamunde. To me one of the best if not the best burger in San Francisco and bay area! You better show up early as the crowd of people will queue in front of the door and before you know it they’ll be out of burgers. Just order the cheese burger, give them your name, go next door to the Tornado and when it’s ready they’ll come get you. I love watching this ballet of Rosamunde burger aficionado. This is a must and please don’t order your burger well done, it’s like ordering a beer warm, don’t do it!!
