Nothing can be better than a lunch at the Hayes Street Grill. This San Francisco classic known by the theatre crowds for its ideal emplacement and its great food, has been an institution in San Francisco for almost 30 years.
Patricia Utterman still oversees the kitchen helped by Chef Rob Zaborny, to serve us still the best seafood in San Francisco.
If you are lucky to walk in while Ken is working the bar, then I would recommend to sit there for lunch. The soft light from the sun will shine over the counter and Ken will be the perfect host to your lunch. He is a nice guy and will deliver an amazing service. If you are more than two then, I will recommend the spacious dinning room.
On this sunny winter day I ordered and shared with The BF, the crab salad. It was nice and fresh, garnished with a few grilled artichoke hearts and some roasted beets. I loved it. The dressing was nice. What else can I want?
Then we had some grilled calamari. I love simple food like this. This is how I can see a great chef, when the ingredients don’t need to be layered with other flavors. Just grilled calamari, perfectly cooked. Yumm!
I followed by the halibut grilled, with a side of fries and The BF asked for the steak (medium-rare) with there famous side of mustard butter.
This was a beautiful lunch with a great service.
Summary: I love this place, they have great food and great service. I have been there a couple dozen times and each time, I enjoy it more. I highly recommend it, though it can be a bit pricey, but hey you have to pay for that freshness!
Note: You can find the Hayes Street Grill at the Ferry building Farmers’ market on Saturday for nice sandwiches.
