The Red Crawfish
Tuesday, February 10, 2009
On this rainy evening we were “en route” for a Vietnamese restaurant in San Francisco’s little Saigon, when we discovered the place closed. Hungry, but not sure what we wanted after our disappointment we walked in the Red Crawfish.
There was a couple with a bag filled with Cajun style crawfish in front of them and all the sudden it captured my interest. The hostess brought us the menu of Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine, but it looked mostly chinese to me and a Cajun menu. Yes you heard it a Cajun menu with Crawfish, Gumbo, fried oysters and all.
We decided on 3 lbs (yes, the BF WAS hungry) of crawfish Louisiana style.
You can actually order them by the pound and with the heat you want.
Minutes later, they brought a bag filled with red, juicy and spicy crawfish, corn on the cob and sausage. Put the bag in the middle of the table and opened it for us to dive in. I thought it was a strange presentation but it didn’t bother me that much. It’s finger food anyway!
As far as the crawfish, I can’t say I didn’t like it but I can’t say I was it impressed either. I think it’s so hard to find seasonal crawfish in San Francisco that I think I was just happy to have some!
The service was a bit lacking. We asked for garlic bread (twice) and it took longer for the garlic bread to come that for the crawfish to cook and be served!
It took me a while to write this review because to this day I am not sure what I should think about this Vietnamese/Chinese place that serves Cajun food. A bit mind bugging.
By the way I took a menu to go and it says Huang’s Kitchen on it. I know I am still scratching my head over this!
Summary: The food was ok, the service could benefit from a bit of more warmth, but overall it was not a bad experience. Now would I recommend this place? Well, I don’t think so. I have had better as far as the crawfish. Bill for 2: $46.08 (not including tip, but including 3 beers)
