Chouquet’s
Sunday, March 29, 2009
When on a Sunday morning the BF and I, were strolling down Fillmore street shopping, we stopped at Chouquet’s at the corner of Fillmore and Washington.
The place was crowded but not packed, I think because of the weather people were more waiting for the out-door sitting.
We crabbed a table inside and got seated right away. Right away we both notice how the staff seems overwhelmed. Although we got seated before another table, our waitress took their order before us. We asked several times for a glass of water that took about as long as if their were going to get it from the source!
We started with a 1/2 dozen of Kumamoto oysters.
Again, the staff running around like headless chicken seem to pay no attention to us. I am realizing that at this point we re getting the “French service”, have you ever been to Paris to sit a a Café on a busy day? Well it felt like being at Chouquet’s on the Saturday brunch, you know your waiter sees you but for some reason, he can’t seem to make his way to your table!
I ordered the croque madame and the BF got tempted by the smoke salmon Benedict.
I was a bit surprise that the croque was an open face sandwich, usually it’s not but it was good. I like it, the egg was perfectly cooked and the yolk start running through the plate as I got to it, giving me a nice rich sauce t play with.
The Bf was satisfied with his dish too, again the eggs were perfectly poached.
I had to pull out a couple of brown leaf out of the salade, a Faux pas that always gets to me, but didn’t dent the fact that we had the food was satisfying.
As a dessert we shared one of France’s classical bistro dessert: une île flottante. Made of poached egg white, on top of a crème anglaise, this it to me one great dessert.
Chouquet’s floating island was disappointing, the egg white was very dense when it should have been light as a cloud. The crème anglaise was too runny for my taste. Though I think it didn't taste bad, it was just not well executed.
Summary: Though, I like the idea of Chouquet’s, the service was a big turn down. The food was just ok. I see a lot of potential in this place but nothing that will bring me back there anytime soon. Bill for 2: $62.93 (not including tip)
